Pretty Lights

Pretty Lights is the electronic music alias of Derek Smith, who is an absolute champion of free music. From this page, you can download all of his Pretty Lights albums completely for free (although, if you feel guilty, you can always donate too).

The latest Pretty Lights album, A Color Map of the Sun, came out in 2013, and was produced in an inspiring and unusual way – instead of finding vinyl to sample to make his beats, (as he usually does), Smith visited Brooklyn, Denver and New Orleans and found local session musicians to play on the record (these sessions are also available for free here: http://prettylightsmusic.com/music/live-studio-sessions-from-a-color-map-of-the-sun-disc-2/).

When these sessions were complete, he pressed them to vinyl, and then sampled these vinyl into his electronic beats in order to make the finished record. This fascinating process is captured in the following short documentary, which is well worth a watch.

Last weekend, we went to Fire In The Mountain Festival in Mid-Wales, where we interviewed our good friend Matthew Frederick, from the band Climbing Trees. This video is a compilation of the photos and videos I took at the festival, and serves as the first installment of both The Free Music Movement’s Festival Review, and our new interview segment, ‘Why Do I Do Music?’. Enjoy.
